The child’s game of Follow the Leader is a study in the realm of being a leader: First of all, there is only one leader; everyone else is a follower. And you may remember as a child that being a follower is not always the most pleasant of experiences. You are always reacting to the leader. You are never ahead of the pack—in fact, you are deeply imbedded in the pack. Eventually, the group disperses into chaos because everyone wants to be the leader. And then suddenly there are no leaders, just noise.
Following the leader in the marketplace is a very similar experience. Always reacting and never seeming to get ahead.
In any field of business, there is one leader. And everyone else reacts to the movements of the leader.
Being a leader in the marketplace is a daunting challenge. Necessary, but daunting. Sometimes just getting your product or service out the door is challenge enough. But in today’s competitive landscape that simply isn’t enough.
